Monday, June 22nd, 1959: There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Zeke Bella, the Mesa right fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the Sub League 2 Player of the Week honors.
Bella piled up 10 hits in 28 at-bats, 2 home runs and 7 RBIs while hitting .357.

Leo Cardenas, the Greensboro Wheat Kings 20-year-old shortstop, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for Sub League 1 Player of the Week honors.
He ripped 12 hits in 22 at-bats, compiling a .545 average with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs.

| Hit Streak Over, Fighting Falcons Stop DeMerit
Tuesday, June 16th, 1959: The Red Bank Fighting Falcons clamped down on John DeMerit and put a stop to his hit streak at 24 straight games. He went without a hit, but it didn't keep the Wheat Kings from winning the game. Greensboro downed the Fighting Falcons 8-7.
This year DeMerit has hit at a .271 clip with 22 RBIs, 4 home runs and 33 runs scored. |
